![]() Overall, Umineko When They Cry is great murder mystery sound novel with plenty of twist to keep high interest throughout each of the chapters. These two elements combined created the most atmospheric effects of the When They Cry series to date, while making you feel like you are in the room with these guys like a shadow, watching the tense situations unfold. ![]() Other various sound effects are used as well, such as the breaking of glass as more of a tool to show various feelings of the characters. ![]() Sound effects here are spot on as well, using many different sound such as the atmosphere seagull caws and creaking of doors to set the pace when entering a room. Soundtrack wise, the novel has focused more on a classical tone, often utilizing a lot of piano, violin, harp and other main staple instruments of that line to help set the mood and to some degree, the tone for the novel. Musically, Umineko‘s soundtrack and sound effects once again fill the void missed by no voice acting in the novel by adding atmosphere and chill as needed. The emotions shown by these characters is just as good as the older sprites, something that I was happy to see retained by the newer sprites as a whole. The more modern style character design, driven by the anime and manga that followed behind its release, was added by MangaGamer for the recent release earlier this year, and is a subtle improvement. The older 07th Expansion style can come off a bit dated in look, but they show the feeling and emotion of each character very well, granting this sort of retro design element from when this game was released back in 2007 in Japan. The character sprites are a gem, following the twin art styles utilized by previous When They Cry titles and are interchangeable based on the player’s taste within the pause menu. Visually, Umineko keeps the static background made famous by the Higurashi novels with vibrant sprites to go over top as each character appears when it is their turn to speak. In terms of the presentation of Umineko, we follow the footsteps of the Higurashi novels with the storyboard quality designs and subtle, yet dramatic music used to create tension for the player. The amount of detail used by the writers is a big bonus as it allows us, the player, to see what goes on in the background before the novel takes place. All this said, the writing is well crafted and played off excellently by the cast of characters. The writing follows a kinetic novel in style, leaving the players to use the information given via the text and the various tip you gather during gameplay to fill in missing pieces. Battler has been absent for some time at a family gathering known as the annual family conference but when he decides to return, he talks of a curse, witches, and other odd topics. A great mystery starts to unfurl around the head of family, questioning the validity of his financial success. Our story is told through the eyes of multiple people in the Ushiromiya family, though the main focus is centered around Battler Ushiromiya, the son of Rudolf and third born of the family. Umineko tells the tale of a legacy, a curse, and the potential descent into madness for a single family. The sound of cicadas is replaced as well, instead you hear the sound of a wave or shifting water, added to the cawing of seagulls in the distance which is your greeting into the new world of Umineko. The main menu for Umineko is considerably different from its predecessors, as once you open the new game menu, you get to choose different chapters based on your progress in the story. This novel, known as the third novel in the When They Cry series, following after the Higurashi Question Arc, as well as the Higurashi Answer Arc, changes the locales and our characters as we meet a new family, but keeps the same, deeply embraced elements of mystery and suspense as we follow another main character on a journey to the truth.įirst impressions of Umineko were similar to the Higurashi When They Cry novels, a very storyboard like quality which is unique to 07th Expansion novels with that familiar writing that leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat. Umineko When They Cry, also known as Umineko When The Seagulls Cry, is a visual novel or sound novel developed by 07th Expansion and published by MangaGamer.
